"Why We Can Rejoice Before the Lord”

“「15」 So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.
「16」 When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.”

“「1」 After the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers, the musicians and the Levites were appointed.
「4」 Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt.

“「1」 all the people came together as one in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded for Israel.
「2」 So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand.
「3」 He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.
「4」 Ezra the teacher of the Law stood on a high wooden platform built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam.
「5」 Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up.
「6」 Ezra praised the Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
「7」 The Levites - Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah - instructed the people in the Law while the people were standing there.
「8」 They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear* and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read. / *Or God, translating it
「9」 Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.
「10」 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
「11」 The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.”
「12」 Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.”

[1] 모든 백성이 한꺼번에 수문 앞 광장에 모였다. 그들은 학자 에스라에게, 주님께서 이스라엘에게 명하신 모세의 율법책을 가지고 오라고 청하였다.
[2] 일곱째 달 초하루에 에스라 제사장은 율법책을 가지고 회중 앞에 나왔다. 거기에는, 남자든 여자든, 알아들을 만한 사람은 모두 나와 있었다.
[5] 학자 에스라는 높은 단 위에 서 있었으므로, 백성들은 모두, 그가 책 펴는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 에스라가 책을 펴면, 백성들은 모두 일어섰다.

[10] 느헤미야는 그들에게 말하였다. "돌아들 가십시오. 살진 짐승들을 잡아 푸짐하게 차려서, 먹고 마시도록 하십시오. 아무것도 차리지 못한 사람들에게는, 먹을 몫을 보내 주십시오. 오늘은 우리 주님의 거룩한 날입니다. 주님 앞에서 기뻐하면 힘이 생기는 법이니, 슬퍼하지들 마십시오."
[11] 레위 사람들도 모든 백성을 달래면서, 오늘은 거룩한 날이니, 조용히 하고, 슬퍼하지 말라고 타일렀다.
[12] 모든 백성은 배운 바를 밝히 깨달았으므로, 돌아가서 먹고 마시며, 없는 사람들에게는 먹을 것을 나누어 주면서, 크게 기뻐하였다.

Why We Can Rejoice Before the Lord
Nehemiah 6–8
Introduction: What Kind of Time Is This?
Today is December 31st.
It is the last day of the year.
Whether we are ready or not,
2025 is ending.
This is what the Bible would call Chronos time.
Chronos is time that moves forward no matter what.
The clock keeps ticking.
The calendar keeps turning.
We cannot stop it.
We cannot slow it down.
We cannot ask it to wait for us.
But the Bible also speaks of another kind of time.
It is called Kairos.
Kairos is not about what time it is,
but about what God is doing.
Kairos is the time when God is at work.
The time when God speaks.
The time when God restores.
The time when God meets His people.
Tonight, the reason we gather is not only because the year is ending.
We gather because we believe God is still at work among us.
This is not only Chronos.
This is Kairos.
1. The Wall Was Finished, But God Was Not Done
In Nehemiah chapter 6, we are told something remarkable.
The wall of Jerusalem was completed in just fifty-two days.
This was not a small achievement.
The people faced opposition, threats, exhaustion, and fear.
Yet the wall was finished.
Even their enemies had to admit something important.
They said,
“This work was done with the help of God.”
But the story does not end with the wall.
In chapter 7, Nehemiah does not celebrate the structure.
Instead, he focuses on people.
Gatekeepers are appointed.
Singers are restored.
Levites are set in place.
Leaders who fear God are chosen.
The names of those who returned from exile are recorded.
Why?
Because God is not satisfied with rebuilt walls
if hearts remain broken.
God restores communities, not just buildings.
God restores relationships, not just structures.
The wall was finished,
but God was still working.
2. When the Word Is Opened, Time Changes
In Nehemiah chapter 8, something powerful happens.
All the people gather together.
Ezra opens the Book of the Law.
The people stand.
The Word is read.
And the Word is explained clearly.
Scripture says,
“the people understood what was being read.”
At that moment, an ordinary day becomes extraordinary.
This is no longer just another morning in Jerusalem.
This is Kairos.
When God’s Word is opened,
Chronos can become Kairos.
Time becomes holy,
because God is speaking.
And when the people understand the Word,
they begin to weep.
3. Why Did the People Weep?
They wept because they finally saw themselves clearly.
They saw how far they had drifted from God.
They remembered why exile had happened.
They realized how much they had lost.
But their tears were not only about guilt.
Their tears also meant this:
God was still speaking to them.
They were not abandoned.
They were not forgotten.
They were not finished.
Sometimes, tears are not a sign of failure.
They are a sign that the Word has truly reached the heart.
4. “Do Not Grieve” — Why Nehemiah Says Rejoice
At that very moment, Nehemiah speaks.
He says,
“Do not grieve.
This day is holy to the Lord.
The joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Why would he say this when people are crying?
Because Nehemiah understands something crucial.
This moment is not about punishment.
This moment is about restoration.
This is not a time to stay in sorrow.
This is a time to recognize that God is working.
Joy, here, is not shallow happiness.
It is not pretending everything is fine.
Joy is the awareness that
God has not given up on His people.
The people are weak.
But God is present.
And that is why Nehemiah says,
“The joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Strength does not come from success.
Strength does not come from perfection.
Strength comes from knowing
God is still with us.
5. What It Means to Rejoice in the Lord
To rejoice in the Lord
does not mean to ignore reality.
It means to choose God’s presence
over despair.
Rejoicing in the Lord means
spending time with Him.
That is why worship matters.
That is why prayer matters.
That is why the Word matters.
When we give time to God,
Chronos becomes Kairos.
Time is no longer something that eats us alive.
Time becomes something God redeems.
6. Understanding Leads to Community
Verse 12 tells us something beautiful.
When the people understood the Word,
they went home,
they ate together,
they shared with those who had nothing,
and they rejoiced greatly.
Understanding did not stop in their minds.
It moved into their lives.
Time with God always moves us toward others.
When God restores hearts,
community is restored as well.
This is a small picture of heaven.
Joy, sharing, belonging, and worship
all together.
7. Where We Are Today
Tonight, we stand at the end of a year.
Some of us are grateful.
Some of us are tired.
Some of us are disappointed.
Some of us are unsure about the future.
But one thing is clear.
God has not stopped working.
This gathering is not an accident.
This moment is not empty.
This is Kairos.
God is still speaking.
God is still restoring.
God is still calling His people together.
That is why we can rejoice tonight.
Not because 2025 was perfect.
Not because 2026 is guaranteed to be easy.
But because God is with us.
Conclusion: Why We Rejoice Tonight
Chronos tells us the year is over.
Kairos tells us God is still at work.
That is why we rejoice.
The joy of the Lord is our strength.
Amen.

1. The Time We Are Standing In
Are we simply watching time pass, or are we standing in a moment where God is at work?
Today is the last day of the year, which reminds us of Chronos—time that flows forward regardless of our readiness.
But Scripture also speaks of Kairos, the time when God is actively at work.
We gather today not only because the year is ending, but because God is still speaking and working among us.
우리는 단지 시간이 지나가는 것을 보고 있는 것입니까, 아니면 하나님이 일하고 계신 순간 위에 서 있습니까?
오늘은 한 해가 끝나는 날로, 멈출 수 없이 흘러가는 크로노스의 시간을 보여 줍니다.
그러나 성경은 하나님이 일하시는 시간인 카이로스를 말합니다.

2. God Finished the Wall but Continued His Work
Why did God keep working even after the wall was completed?
The wall of Jerusalem was completed in fifty-two days by God’s help.
Yet God did not stop with the structure.
He restored people, leadership, worship, and community, showing that His true concern is not buildings but hearts and relationships.
왜 하나님은 성벽이 완성된 후에도 일을 멈추지 않으셨습니까?
예루살렘 성벽은 하나님의 도우심으로 52일 만에 완성되었습니다.
그러나 하나님은 건물에서 멈추지 않으셨습니다.
사람과 지도자, 예배와 공동체를 회복하시며, 하나님이 원하시는 회복은 구조물이 아니라 관계임을 보여 주셨습니다.
3. When God’s Word Is Opened, Time Becomes Holy
What changes when God’s Word is truly heard and understood?
When Ezra read and explained the Word, an ordinary gathering became a decisive moment.
Understanding God’s Word transformed ordinary time into Kairos.
God’s presence made the moment holy.
하나님의 말씀이 참으로 들리고 깨달아질 때, 무엇이 달라집니까?
에스라가 말씀을 읽고 설명할 때, 평범한 모임은 결정적인 순간이 되었습니다.
말씀을 깨닫는 순간, 크로노스의 시간은 카이로스로 바뀌었습니다.
하나님의 임재가 그 시간을 거룩하게 만들었습니다.
4. Tears as a Sign of True Understanding
Why do people sometimes weep when they truly encounter God’s Word?
The people wept because they saw themselves clearly before God.
Their tears were not only about guilt, but about realizing that God was still speaking to them.
Tears became evidence that the Word had reached their hearts.
왜 사람들은 하나님의 말씀을 참으로 만날 때 울게 됩니까?
백성들은 하나님 앞에서 자신의 모습을 분명히 보았기에 울었습니다.
그 울음은 죄책감만이 아니라, 하나님이 여전히 말씀하고 계시다는 깨달음에서 나왔습니다.
울음은 말씀이 마음에 도달했다는 증거가 되었습니다.
5. “Do Not Grieve” and the Meaning of Joy
Why does God call His people to rejoice even in a moment of repentance?
Nehemiah told the people not to grieve because this moment was not about punishment but restoration.
Joy was not denial of reality, but recognition that God was still present.
The joy of the Lord became their strength because God had not abandoned them.
왜 하나님은 회개의 순간에도 당신의 백성에게 기뻐하라고 말씀하십니까?
느헤미야가 “슬퍼하지 말라”고 한 이유는 이 순간이 징계가 아니라 회복의 시간이었기 때문입니다.
기쁨은 현실을 부정하는 것이 아니라, 하나님이 여전히 함께하신다는 인식입니다.

6. Rejoicing as Spending Time with God
What does it actually mean to rejoice in the Lord?
Rejoicing in the Lord means choosing God’s presence over despair.
Worship, prayer, and the Word are ways we spend time with God.
When we give time to God, Chronos is redeemed into Kairos.
주님을 기뻐한다는 것은 실제로 무엇을 의미합니까?
주님을 기뻐하는 것은 절망 대신 하나님의 임재를 선택하는 것입니다.
예배와 기도, 말씀은 하나님과 시간을 보내는 방법입니다.

7. Understanding That Flows into Community
Why does true understanding of God’s Word always move us toward others?
When the people truly understood the Word, their response was joy, sharing, and generosity.
Time with God naturally led to restored relationships and community life.

백성들이 말씀을 밝히 깨달았을 때, 그 결과는 기쁨과 나눔, 섬김이었습니다.

8. A Small Picture of Heaven
What does God’s kingdom look like when it appears among His people?
Worship, joy, sharing, and unity formed a small picture of God’s kingdom.
A restored community reflects heaven through joy and togetherness.
하나님의 나라가 하나님의 백성 가운데 나타날 때, 그 모습은 어떻습니까?
예배와 기쁨, 나눔과 연합은 하나님의 나라를 보여 주는 작은 천국의 모습입니다.
회복된 공동체는 기쁨과 하나됨으로 하나님 나라를 드러냅니다.
9. God at Work Through Weakness
Why does God so often choose to work through weakness rather than strength?
God often works most clearly through human weakness.
Daily time with God helps us live not in forced time, but in God’s appointed time.
왜 하나님은 강함보다 연약함을 통해 더 자주 일하십니까?’
하나님은 인간의 강함보다 연약함을 통해 더 분명히 일하십니다.
날마다 하나님과 시간을 보낼 때, 우리는 강요된 시간이 아닌 하나님의 때를 살게 됩니다.
10. Why We Rejoice Today
Why can we rejoice today, even at the end of the year?
Although the year ends in Chronos, today is still Kairos.
We rejoice not because the past year was perfect or the future is certain,
but because God is still with us and still at work.
왜 우리는 한 해의 끝자락에서도 기뻐할 수 있습니까?
한 해는 크로노스로 끝나지만, 오늘은 여전히 카이로스의 시간입니다.
우리는 지나간 해가 완벽해서도, 미래가 보장되어서도 아니라
하나님이 지금도 우리와 함께 일하고 계시기에 기뻐합니다.
Closing Summary
If God is still at work among us, how can we not rejoice?
지금도 하나님이 우리 가운데 일하고 계시다면, 우리가 기뻐하지 않을 이유가 있습니까?
We rejoice not because time has passed well,
but because God is still at work with us.
우리는 시간이 잘 흘러갔기 때문에 기뻐하는 것이 아니라,

[1] When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it - though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates -
[14] Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, my God, because of what they have done; remember also the prophet Noadiah and how she and the rest of the prophets have been trying to intimidate me.
[15] So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.
[16] When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.

The final challenge in the wall construction

Introduction | The Last Stage Is the Most Intense

Dear brothers and sisters,
when we serve God, there is a moment we often experience.
Just when we feel,
“We are almost there,”
that is when the strongest resistance appears.
This was true in the days of Nehemiah.
The broken walls had been rebuilt.
But the gates had not yet been installed.
The work was close to completion, but it was not finished.
And at this final stage,
the enemies launched their most intense attack.
Satan is often less concerned
about stopping God’s work from beginning
than about making sure it never gets finished.

Nehemiah 6:9a
“They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, ‘Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.’ But I prayed, ‘Now strengthen my hands.’”

Instead, they used rumors and intimidation.
They said,
“Nehemiah is rebelling against the king.
He wants to make himself king.”
The issue was not whether the rumor was true.
The real goal was fear.
Fear makes leaders hesitate.
Fear pulls God’s servants away from their calling.
Fear stops the work of God.
But Nehemiah did not leave the site.
He did not go to defend himself.
He stayed where God had placed him and prayed.

Brothers and sisters,
in moments of crisis, God’s people choose prayer,
not explanation.
2. Internal Attacks | Temptation Disguised as Faith
The attack became more subtle.
This time it came wearing religious clothing.
A false prophet came to Nehemiah and said,
“People are coming to kill you.
Go into the temple and hide to save your life.”
It sounded spiritual.
It sounded wise.
But it was a trap.
If Nehemiah entered the temple,
he would violate God’s law
and destroy his integrity as a leader.
Nehemiah answered firmly.

Nehemiah 6:11
“But I said, ‘Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!’”
This was not just bravery.
It was an identity confession.
“I know who I am.
I know why God placed me here.”
Not every religious-sounding voice comes from God.
If it leads us to fear and abandonment of our calling,
it is not from Him.

3. The Standard of Discernment | Fear or My God?
Nehemiah discerns every situation he faces
by repeatedly confessing, “my God.”
The standard of discernment is simple.
We must ask:
Is this word coming from God,
or is it meant to make me afraid
and cause me to abandon my calling?
This is the same question we must ask today.
The real issue is not whether a choice feels comfortable or safe,
but whether this is the place
where God is calling me to stand before Him.
Faithful to the End | Shaken, but Not Broken
Nehemiah was under pressure.
He was threatened,
and he was alone.
Yet he did not lay down his mission.
The apostle Paul confesses this kind of life:

perplexed, but not in despair;
persecuted, but not abandoned;
struck down, but not
God’s people are not those who live without suffering,
but those who do not collapse in the midst of suffering.
4. After the Wall Is Finished | The Real Rebuilding Begins
At last, the wall is completed.
Only then do the people truly realize what has happened.

Nehemiah 6:16
“When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.”
However, Nehemiah does not stop there.
Although the wall has been rebuilt,
the hearts of the people still need restoration.
So together with Ezra the scribe,
he restores the Word,
and rebuilds the spiritual wall of the community.
This is because a wall built on God’s Word
is more important than a wall that can be seen with the eyes.
Conclusion | Our Final Test Today
Dear brothers and sisters,
what kind of final test are you standing before today?
Is it fear?
Is it temptation?
Is it the desire to give up?
God is still asking us today:
“Will you run away from this place,
or will you hold on to the mission I have entrusted to you until the end?”
This is the prayer we offer today:
“God, now strengthen my hands.”

The Final Test of the Wall

Dear brothers and sisters, when we serve God, there is a moment we often experience.
Just when we feel, “We are almost there,” that is when the strongest resistance appears.
This was true in the days of Nehemiah. The broken walls had been rebuilt. But the gates had not yet been installed. The work was close to completion, but it was not finished.
And at this final stage, the enemies launched their most intense attack.

The enemies spread false rumors, accusing Nehemiah of rebellion. Their goal was not truth, but fear.
If they could frighten the leader, the work would stop. Fear always tries to pull God’s servants away from their calling. Nehemiah chose prayer and perseverance instead of explanation and escape.

Completing the wall was not the end, but the beginning. Opposition still remained, and the people needed spiritual renewal. Together with Ezra, Nehemiah rebuilt the community through God’s Word. This renewal shaped Israel for generations until the coming of the Messiah.

Last week, we reflected on the way God works.
Jesus did not come in power, but in humility.
He did not come to a palace, but to a manger.
That is God’s way.

3. Jesus Came to Reveal God’s Love

Many people think of God as distant or angry.
But Jesus shows us who God truly is.

Jesus is not just a messenger from God.
Jesus is God revealing His heart.

The manger tells us this truth:
God comes close to us.

4. Jesus Came to Tell Us Who We Are

Jesus did not only come to teach us how to live.
He came to tell us who we are.

Through Jesus, we learn:
We are not abandoned.
We are not forgotten.

5. Jesus Came Not to Condemn, but to Save

예수님은 정죄가 아니라 구원을 위해 오셨다

Many people live under guilt and shame.
They think God came to judge them.
많은 사람들은 죄책감과 수치심 속에서 살아갑니다.
하나님이 자신을 심판하러 오셨다고 생각합니다.
But Jesus says otherwise.
그러나 예수님은 분명히 말씀하십니다.
John 3:17
“God did not send His Son to condemn the world.”

The manger leads us to the cross.
It is love that saves.

Ask yourself:
Do I truly believe that God loves me?
Am I trying to earn God’s love, or receive it?
Who around me needs to hear this message?

Jesus came humbly.
Jesus came intentionally.
Jesus came in love.

Through Him, we may know we are God’s beloved.

The Purpose of Jesus’ Coming
John 3:16–17
Introduction
Last week, we talked about the way God works.
We reflected on how Jesus came into this world.
He did not come with armies.
He did not come with political power.
He did not come to a palace.
Jesus came quietly.
Jesus came humbly.
Jesus came to a manger.
That is not just a Christmas detail.
That is a revelation of God’s way.
God does not work the way we expect.
God does not shout to prove His authority.
God comes low. God comes near.
So this week, I want us to ask a deeper question.
If that is how Jesus came,
then why did He come at all?
Why would God step into our world?
Why would eternity enter time?
Why would holiness enter brokenness?
The Bible gives us a clear and beautiful answer.
Jesus came so that we would know—
without doubt, without fear—
that we are loved by God.
Scripture Reading
John 3:16–17 says:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world,
but to save the world through Him.”
This is not just a familiar verse.
This is the mission statement of Jesus’ coming.
1. Jesus Came to Reveal God’s Heart
Many people carry an image of God that is distorted.
Some see God as distant.
Some see God as constantly disappointed.
Some see God as waiting for us to fail.
And because of that image, people keep their distance from God.
But Jesus came to correct that misunderstanding.
Jesus did not come merely to talk about God.
Jesus came to show us God.
If you want to know what God is like,
look at Jesus.
When Jesus touches the sick,
that is God’s heart.
When Jesus eats with sinners,
that is God’s heart.
When Jesus welcomes the outcast,
that is God’s heart.
Jesus is not a softer version of God.
Jesus is God revealing Himself.
And the manger tells us something powerful.
God is not afraid of our weakness.
God is not repelled by our brokenness.
God comes close.
The manger says,
“I am not a God who stays far away.
I am a God who comes near.”
2. Jesus Came to Tell Us Who We Are
Jesus did not only come to teach us how to live better lives.
He came to answer a deeper question:
Who are we to God?
Many people define themselves by failure.
By shame.
By comparison.
By what others have said about them.
But Jesus comes to restore identity.
John 3:16 does not begin with our effort.
It begins with God’s love.
“For God so loved the world…”
Not the perfect world.
Not the deserving world.
The broken world.
Jesus came because love moved God.
Through Jesus, God tells us:
You are not abandoned.
You are not an accident.
You are not a burden.
You are loved.
That is why the Bible says that those who receive Jesus become children of God.
Not servants trying to earn approval.
Not outsiders hoping to be tolerated.
Children.
The gospel is not,
“Try harder and maybe God will love you.”
The gospel is,
“Because God loves you, come home.”
3. Jesus Came Not to Condemn, but to Save
Many people think God came to judge them.
They assume that if God truly knows them,
He must be disappointed.
They live under guilt.
They live under fear.
They live under constant self-accusation.
But listen again to John 3:17.
“God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world.”
Jesus did not come pointing a finger.
Jesus came extending His hands.
The manger points us to the cross.
From birth to death, Jesus’ life says one thing clearly:
God is for you.
Jesus knew our sin—and He still came.
Jesus knew our weakness—and He still came.
Jesus knew the cost—and He still came.
That is love.
Not love that ignores sin,
but love that carries it.
Not love that condemns,
but love that saves.
Application
So let me ask us a few honest questions today.
Do I truly believe that God loves me—
or do I just believe God tolerates me?
Am I living as someone trying to earn God’s love,
or as someone learning to receive it?
And who in my life needs to hear this truth—
that God’s heart toward them is love, not condemnation?
We cannot give to others what we have not received ourselves.
When we know we are loved,
we become people who love.
Conclusion
Jesus came humbly.
Jesus came intentionally.
Jesus came in love.
The manger is not just the beginning of a story.
It is the message of the story.
God would rather enter our brokenness
than remain distant in His glory.
The purpose of Jesus’ coming is this:
That through Him,
we may know—deeply, personally, securely—
we are God’s beloved.
And once you know that,
everything changes.
Amen.

주님, 저를 통하여 일하소서

1. God Works Even Through Worldly Power

1. 하나님은 세상의 권력을 통해서도 일하신다

Caesar Augustus appeared to control the world through his decree.
Yet his command unknowingly fulfilled God’s prophecy (Micah 5:2).
What looks like human power often becomes a tool in God’s plan.
아우구스투스 황제의 칙령은 세상을 움직이는 권력처럼 보였다.
그러나 그 결정은 하나님의 예언(미가 5:2)을 이루는 도구가 되었다.
인간의 권력처럼 보이는 것도 하나님의 손 안에 있다.

2. Jesus Came to the Lowest Place

2. 예수님은 가장 낮은 자리로 오셨다

Jesus was not born in a palace but laid in a manger.
The manger represents poverty, vulnerability, and humility.
God chose a low place to enter the world.
예수님은 궁전이 아니라 구유에 누이셨다.
구유는 가난함과 연약함, 낮아짐을 상징한다.
하나님은 가장 낮은 자리를 택해 이 땅에 오셨다.

3. The Manger Points to the Cross

The manger foreshadows Jesus’ life of self-emptying.
It points toward broken bread and poured-out blood.
From birth to death, Jesus chose humility.
구유는 예수님의 자기 비움의 삶을 예고한다.
찢어진 떡과 부어진 잔, 십자가의 죽음을 향한다.
예수님은 처음부터 끝까지 낮아지셨다.

4. God Works Through the Lowly

4. 하나님은 낮은 자를 통해 일하신다

God does not wait for status, power, or perfection.
He works through obedience, availability, and faith.
Ordinary people become instruments of God’s work.
하나님은 지위나 능력, 완벽함을 기다리지 않으신다.
순종과 헌신, 믿음을 통해 일하신다.
평범한 사람들이 하나님의 도구가 된다.

5. Christmas Is a Call, Not Just a Celebration

Christmas reveals how God chooses to work in the world.
We are invited to follow Jesus’ path of humility.
God desires to work through us today.
성탄은 하나님이 일하시는 방식을 보여준다.
우리는 예수님의 낮아짐의 길을 따르도록 부름받았다.
하나님은 오늘도 우리를 통해 일하기 원하신다.

6. Life Application

Even when life feels painful, uncertain, or insignificant, God is at work.
Trust God in your low places.
Pray: “Lord, work through me.”
삶이 아프고, 불확실하고, 보잘것없어 보여도 하나님은 일하신다.

기도하라: “주님, 저를 통하여 일하소서.”

“Overcoming Internal Enemies and Giving Thanks Together”

Nehemiah 5:1–7
Thanksgiving Sunday

“내부의 방해를 이기고, 함께 감사하는 공동체”

(느헤미야 5:1–7)

🟩 1. Introduction – The Hardest Enemy Is Inside

The greatest danger to God’s work is not always outside opposition, but internal collapse. Nehemiah 5 shows us how deeply the community was wounded—not by enemies outside the walls, but by brothers who hurt and exploited one another.
On this Thanksgiving Sunday, we remember how God has protected us from internal division and allowed us to remain a loving, united community.

🟩 1. 외부의 공격보다 더 위험한 ‘내부의 무너짐’
하나님의 사역을 위협하는 가장 큰 적은 외부의 공격이 아니라 내부의 무너짐입니다. 느헤미야 5장은 공동체가 외부가 아닌 형제의 상처와 착취로 인해 얼마나 흔들렸는지를 보여 줍니다.
추수감사주일을 맞아, 하나님께서 우리 공동체를 갈라짐 없이 지켜 주시고, 서로 사랑하며 한마음 되게 하신 은혜를 감사하며 돌아봅니다.

🟦 2. The Cry of the People — When Brothers Hurt Brothers (Nehemiah 5:1–5)

Four groups of people were crying out:

Families unable to feed their children
People who lost homes and land
People drowning in taxes and debt
Families who had to sell their children as slaves

The tragedy was this: their oppressors were their fellow Jews.
Internal greed destroyed unity and weakened God’s people
🟦 2. 내부의 방해 세력: 울부짖음, 착취, 무너진 형제 사랑
백성들의 울부짖음은 네 부류로 나타납니다.
— “아들딸이 많아 먹고 살기 어렵습니다.”(1–2절)
— “흉년으로 배고파서 밭과 포도원과 집을 다 잡혔습니다”(3절)
— “세금을 낼 돈이 없어 빚을 졌습니다”(4절)
— “우리 딸들 중에 벌써 종이 된 아이도 있습니다”(5절)

자녀들을 먹이지 못하는 가정
포도원과 집(전재산)을 잃은 사람들
세금 때문에 빚더미에 오른 사람들
결국 자녀까지 종으로 팔린 가정

더 큰 비극은 이것입니다: 이들을 억압한 자들이 바로 같은 유다 형제들이었다는 점입니다. 내부의 탐욕은 공동체의 영적 힘을 약하게 만들었습니다.
“우리 육체도 형제의 육체와 같고, 우리 자녀도 그들의 자녀와 같거늘…” (5절

🟥 3. Nehemiah’s Response — Holy Anger, Discernment, and Restoration (5:6–13)

“When I heard their cries and their sighs, I was very angry” (v. 6).
“After I had considered this in my heart” (v. 7).
“I rebuked them for the sake of the assembly” (v. 7).
Nehemiah responded in three steps:

Holy anger — He was deeply grieved by injustice.
Reflection and discernment — He paused to think before acting.
Clear action and restoration — He confronted the leaders publicly and restored justice.

Healthy community is not built by avoiding conflict, but by confronting sin with truth and restoring what is broken.

🟥 3. 지도자의 반응: 분노하되, 신중하게 해결하는 지혜
“그들의 울부짖음과 탄식을 듣고 나도 크게 분노하였다”(6절)
“나는 이것을 마음속에 깊이 생각한 후”(7절)
“대회를 열고 그들을 책망하였다”(7절)

느헤미야의 반응은 세 단계였습니다.

거룩한 분노 — 불의 앞에서 마음 깊이 아파했습니다.
성찰과 분별 — 감정으로 움직이지 않고 먼저 생각했습니다.
공개적 책망과 회복 — 공동체(대회) 앞에서 진실을 드러내고 정의를 회복했습니다.

건강한 공동체는 갈등을 피함으로 세워지지 않습니다. 죄를 진리로 다루고, 무너진 것을 바로잡을 때 세워집니다.

🟨 4. Thanksgiving Application — God Has Kept Us Together

True thanksgiving arises not from a year without problems, but from God sustaining us through problems.
This year our church has:

wept together,
rejoiced together,
prayed for one another,
welcomed new friends,
shared burdens and hopes,
and experienced God’s love through community.

Our unity is a gift from God.

🟨 4. 감사절 적용 — 하나님께서 우리를 함께 지켜 주셨나이다
참된 감사는 문제가 없어서가 아니라, 문제 속에서도 하나님께서 우리를 지켜 주셨기 때문에 나옵니다. 올해 우리 교회는

함께 울고,
함께 웃고,
서로를 위해 기도하고, 공동체를 환대하며,
짐을 나누고,
하나님의 사랑을 실제로 경험했습니다.

이 공동체의 하나 됨이 바로 하나님의 선물입니다.

🟫 5. Spiritual Application — Remove Internal Enemies, Restore God’s Heart

Internal obstacles must be removed: comparison, jealousy, complaints, bitterness, indifference
And we must restore God’s heart: compassion, forgiveness, generosity, unity
Thanksgiving is not only a holiday - it is a spiritual act of restoration.
🟫 5. 영적 적용 — 내부의 방해요소를 제거하고 하나님의 마음을 회복하라
내부의 방해 요소를 제거해야 합니다. : 비교, 질투, 원망, 쓴 뿌리, 무관심
그리고 하나님의 마음을 회복해야 합니다. : 긍휼, 용서, 관대함, 하나 됨
감사는 단순한 절기가 아니라, 영적 회복의 실천입니다.

🟧 6. Conclusion — Give Thanks and Rebuild Together

On this Thanksgiving Sunday, we confess:
“Lord, thank You for keeping us together.”
“Thank You for teaching us to love.”
“Thank You for building Your kingdom among us.”
Let us continue rebuilding our families, our church, and our society - together, with gratitude and faith.
🟧 6. 결론 – 감사가 공동체의 성벽을 다시 세운다
추수감사주일을 맞아 이렇게 고백합니다:
“주님, 우리 공동체를 지켜 주셔서 감사합니다.”

“Overcoming Internal Enemies and Giving Thanks Together”
Nehemiah 5:1–13
1. Introduction — The Hardest Battle Is Not Outside, but Inside
Dear brothers and sisters,
Today is Thanksgiving Sunday—a day when we stop, remember, and give thanks for how the Lord has carried us through another year.
For the past several weeks, we have been walking through the book of Nehemiah. We have seen the people of God rebuild the broken walls of Jerusalem despite ridicule, threats, fear, and constant pressure from their enemies.
But today’s passage shows a different kind of enemy.
Not an enemy outside, but an enemy inside.
An enemy that destroys relationships, breaks trust, wounds hearts, and weakens community.
If last week we talked about the external attacks that try to stop God’s work,
Nehemiah 5 shows us the internal attacks that try to destroy God’s people.
And as we enter Thanksgiving Sunday, this passage helps us reflect on how precious it is that God has protected our church, carried us, and helped us love one another.
2. The Cry of the People — When Brothers Hurt Brothers (Nehemiah 5:1–5)
Nehemiah 5 begins with a painful cry from the people:
Four groups of people are crying out:
1) Those struggling to survive
“We have many sons and daughters, and we cannot even get enough grain to feed our families.” (v.2)
2) Those who lost their fields and homes because of poverty
“We had to mortgage our fields and vineyards and homes to get food.” (v.3)
3) Those drowning under heavy taxes
“We borrowed money to pay the king’s tax.” (v.4)
4) Those forced to sell their sons and daughters as slaves
“We are powerless… some of our daughters have already been enslaved.” (v.5)
And the heartbreaking truth behind these cries?
Their oppressors were not foreigners.
They were their own Jewish brothers.
Fellow believers.
People who worshiped the same God.
People who should have protected each other—but instead exploited each other.
This was not merely an economic crisis.
It was a spiritual crisis,
a relational crisis,
a community crisis.
The internal enemy of God’s people was:
- Greed
- Self-centeredness
- Lack of compassion
- Broken unity
- A forgotten identity
And when the inside collapses, the walls cannot stand.
3. Nehemiah’s Response — Holy Anger, Deep Reflection, Clear Action (5:6–13)
Nehemiah’s reaction is deeply instructive for us:
1) He felt righteous anger
“I was very angry when I heard their outcry.” (v.6)
There is anger that destroys.
But there is also holy anger that awakens justice.
Nehemiah’s anger was not self-centered—it was God-centered.
2) He paused to think before acting
“I pondered them in my heart.” (v.7)
He didn’t react emotionally.
He didn’t rush.
He didn’t attack.
He discerned.
He reflected.
He prayed.
Many conflicts in church and family would never grow if we learned to pause and pray before speaking.
3) He confronted the problem honestly
“I accused the nobles and officials.” (v.7)
He brings the issue into the light.
He calls sin “sin.”
He calls injustice “injustice.”
A community cannot be healed until truth is spoken.
4) He calls the people back to God’s heart
“Should you not walk in the fear of our God?” (v.9)
True unity is not built on agreements or strategies— but on fear of the Lord.
5) He leads by example
Nehemiah refuses to burden the people.
He refuses to take advantage of his position.
He practices generosity and self-sacrifice.
Leadership always requires modeling what we preach.
6) The people repent and are restored
“We will give it back… We will require nothing more.” (v.12)
Repentance leads to restoration.
Restoration leads to healing.
Healing leads to thanksgiving.
4. Thanksgiving Application — God Has Kept Our Community Together
Today’s message leads us to one simple truth:
The greatest reason we give thanks today
is not because everything went well,
but because God has kept us together.
This year, we have experienced God’s grace in many ways:
- We shared tears at funerals and comforted grieving families.
- We celebrated baptisms, birthdays, new babies, and new beginnings.
- We prayed for one another’s jobs, studies, and immigration needs.
- We welcomed newcomers, international students, and visitors.
- We laughed together at retreats, picnics, and church events.
- We strengthened our house churches, and small groups.
- We restored relationships and forgave one another.
While the world grows colder,
God has allowed our church to grow warmer.
This is a miracle.
This is God’s grace.
This is something to give thanks for.
And today’s passage challenges us:
1) Remove internal enemies
- comparison
- jealousy
- grumbling
- bitterness
- indifference
- selfishness
These do not belong in the family of God.
2) Restore the heart of God
- compassion
- justice
- generosity
- forgiveness
- sacrifice
- unity
These are the stones that build the walls of God’s people.
3) Become a community that reflects Christ
Thanksgiving is not just a holiday.
It is a spiritual practice:
a decision to remember, to restore, and to respond with gratitude.
5. Conclusion — Give Thanks, and Rebuild the Wall Together
Nehemiah shows us:
- God restores nations
- God restores communities
- God restores relationships
- God restores broken places within us
And He does it through people who fear Him, love Him, and love each other.
Today, on Thanksgiving Sunday,
let this be our confession:
“Lord, thank You for keeping us together.
Thank You for teaching us to love one another.
Thank You for building Your kingdom among us.”
May we continue to rebuild the walls of our families, our church, and our society—
together, with gratitude, and with the strength that God supplies.
Amen.

Nehemiah 4:1-14
[1] When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews,
[2] and in the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria, he said, “What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble - burned as they are?”
[3] Tobiah the Ammonite, who was at his side, said, “What they are building - even a fox climbing up on it would break down their wall of stones!”
[4] Hear us, our God, for we are despised. Turn their insults back on their own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity.
[5] Do not cover up their guilt or blot out their sins from your sight, for they have thrown insults in the face of the builders.
[6] So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart.
[7] But when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the people of Ashdod heard that the repairs to Jerusalem’s walls had gone ahead and that the gaps were being closed, they were very angry.
[8] They all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and stir up trouble against it.
[9] But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat.
[10] Meanwhile, the people in Judah said, “The strength of the laborers is giving out, and there is so much rubble that we cannot rebuild the wall.”
[11] Also our enemies said, “Before they know it or see us, we will be right there among them and will kill them and put an end to the work.”
[12] Then the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”
[13] Therefore I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears and bows.
[14] After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”

“하나님의 일의 방해세력 (1) - 실망과 두려움을 주려는 세력”

🟦 1 - When God’s Work Begins, Opposition Also Comes

When God’s people rise to rebuild, the enemy rises to oppose.
Sanballat and Tobiah mocked, discouraged, and threatened the workers.
Even internal voices of discouragement appeared: “There is too much rubble… we cannot rebuild.” (Neh. 4:10)
Opposition aims to break the heart so that the work stops.

1️⃣ 하나님의 일이 시작되면 방해도 반드시 일어난다 (4:1–3)
하나님의 일을 시작하면 반드시 방해가 찾아옵니다. 산발랏과 도비야는 조롱하고, 낙심시키고, 위협했습니다.
심지어 내부에서도 불평이 나왔습니다: “흙무더기가 너무 많아서 우리가 능히 성을 쌓지 못하겠다” (느 4:10).
방해의 목적은 마음을 무너뜨려 일을 멈추게 하는 것입니다.

🟩2 - How did Nehemiah respond in the face of opposition?

✔ ① — Nehemiah Responds With Prayer First

Nehemiah did not react emotionally nor defend himself. He brought the matter directly to God:
“Lord, hear us, for we are despised.” (4:4)
Through prayer, the people regained strength, and Scripture says,
“So the people worked with all their heart.” (4:6)

✔ ② Remembering God in the Crisis

Nehemiah called the people back to spiritual focus:
“Do not be afraid. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome!” (4:14)
Faith begins not by looking at the size of the threat but by remembering the greatness of God.

2️⃣ 방해 앞에서 느헤미야는 어떻게 반응했는가?
느헤미야는 감정적으로 대응하지 않았습니다.
그는 모든 상황을 하나님께로 가져갔습니다:
“우리 하나님이여, 들으시옵소서. 우리가 업신여김을 당하나이다” (느 4:4).

Jesus said, “Get behind me, Satan.”
Nehemiah declared to the enemy, “You have no share or claim in Jerusalem.” (2:20)
Likewise, believers must pray specifically:

Declare God’s ownership
“Lord, this area of my life belongs to You.”
Reject the enemy’s influence
“Fear, discouragement—leave in Jesus’ name.”
Invite God’s kingdom
“Lord, let Your rule come into my heart and home.”
Commit to obedience today
“Strengthen me to obey You right now.”

3️⃣ 적용 — 방해를 끊어내는 구체적인 기도
예수님은 “사탄아 물러가라”라고 기도하셨습니다.
느헤미야는 “너희는 이 땅에서 아무 기업도 없고, 권리도 없다” (느 2:20)고 선포했습니다.
우리도 구체적으로 기도해야 합니다:

소유권 선포
“주님, 이 삶의 영역은 하나님 것입니다.”
대적 거절
“두려움과 낙심은 떠나가라.”

🟪 4 - Building the Wall Through Obedience

Opposition is a sign that you are walking in God’s calling.
Prayer gives strength.
Faith declarations break darkness.
But obedience is what actually rebuilds the wall.
The wall was rebuilt in 52 days—not by talent, but by prayer + unity + obedience.
4️⃣ 결론 — 변화는 ‘기도’로 시작되지만, ‘순종’으로 완성된다
방해는 우리가 하나님의 사명을 따라가고 있다는 증거입니다.
기도는 힘을 주고,
믿음의 선포는 어둠을 끊어내지만,
실제로 성벽을 세우는 것은 순종입니다.
52일 만에 성벽이 재건된 이유는 능력이 아니라 기도 + 연합 + 순종이었습니다.

“Lord, show me the broken walls of my life.
Help me see You greater than my fears.
Give me courage to obey today,
and rebuild my life, my family, and my community through Your grace.”

“Faith That Builds the Wall – Overcoming Opposition”
Nehemiah 4:1–14
Introduction — When God’s People Rise, Opposition Also Rises
Brothers and sisters, whenever God begins a new work in His people, the enemy also begins his work.
When God builds, Satan tries to break.
When God restores, Satan tries to discourage.
When God calls you to move forward, the enemy whispers, “You can’t. You’re too weak. Look at all the rubble.”
That is exactly what happened in Nehemiah 4.
The people of God were rebuilding the broken walls of Jerusalem.
But the moment the work started, opposition came from every direction—mockery, threats, discouragement, fear, and internal exhaustion.
And the same thing happens in our lives.
When you try to rebuild faith…
When you try to restore your family…
When you commit to purity, prayer, Scripture, worship…
When you decide to live a new life in Christ…
Opposition rises.
But today, God gives us a word: “Do not be afraid. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome.” (Neh. 4:14)
This is the faith that builds the wall.
1. When God’s Work Begins, Opposition Will Come
Nehemiah 4 opens with Sanballat and Tobiah laughing at the Jews.
“What are these feeble Jews doing?”
“If even a fox climbs on this wall, it will fall!”
Their words were designed to break the spirit of God’s people.
Today, the enemy does the same thing:
- “You’re not strong enough to change.”
- “Your past is too heavy.”
- “Your family is too broken.”
- “Your faith is too small.”
- “Your sin is too great.”
Then came internal discouragement:
“There is too much rubble. We cannot rebuild.” (4:10)
Rubble is the enemy’s favorite weapon.
Rubble is:
- your past failures
- unresolved habits
- emotional burdens
- broken relationships
- regrets
- disappointments
- the heaviness that makes you say, “I can’t anymore”
Before the wall collapses, the heart collapses first.
This is how the enemy works.
But God teaches Nehemiah—and us—how to overcome such attacks.
2. Nehemiah Responds with Prayer First
Nehemiah does not debate, defend, or fight the critics.
He does not waste energy arguing with those who try to stop God’s work.
Instead, he immediately turns to God:
“Lord, hear us, for we are despised.” (4:4)
Prayer was not the last step—it was the first response.
Because of that prayer, the Bible says:
“So the people worked with all their heart.” (4:6)
Prayer restored their spirit.
Prayer revived courage.
Prayer broke the power of discouragement.
Brothers and sisters, when you feel the rubble of your life overwhelming you,
do not argue with the enemy—run to God in prayer.
3. Remembering God in the Crisis
When fear began to rise, Nehemiah gathered the people and lifted their eyes to God:
“Do not be afraid of them.
Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome!” (4:14)
This is the turning point.
Faith is not ignoring the problem.
Faith is remembering who God is in the middle of the problem.
The people were not saved because the enemy disappeared.
They were saved because they remembered:
- God is greater
- God is stronger
- God is faithful
- God called them
- God will finish what He began
When fear rises in your heart, you must preach to yourself:
“Remember the Lord!”
4. Prayers That Cut Off the Enemy’s Influence
In the Gospels, Jesus said, “Get behind me, Satan.”
In Nehemiah 2:20, Nehemiah declared:
“You have no share, no claim, no historic right in Jerusalem.”
He was saying:
“This land belongs to God. You have no authority here. Leave.”
You must pray like this over your life:
1) Declare God’s ownership
“Lord, this area of my life belongs to You.”
2) Reject the enemy’s influence
“In Jesus’ name, fear, discouragement, and confusion must leave.”
3) Invite God’s kingdom
“Lord, let Your rule fill my heart, my family, my work, and my future.”
4) Commit to obedience today
“Lord, strengthen me to obey You now—not later.”
These prayers restore spiritual clarity and rebuild the inner wall of the heart.
5. Faith That Rebuilds the Wall
Opposition is not a sign of defeat;
it is a sign that you are walking in God’s calling.
God did not remove the enemy—
He strengthened the workers.
The wall was rebuilt in 52 days.
Not because the people were powerful,
but because they were:
- people of prayer
- people of unity
- people of obedience
- people who remembered the Lord
This is the faith that builds the wall.
Conclusion — A Call to Rebuild Your Wall Today
Brothers and sisters,
Where are the walls broken in your life?
- Your faith?
- Your relationships?
- Your purity?
- Your calling?
- Your hope?
- Your prayer life?
Where has the enemy attacked you?
Today the Lord says:
“Do not be afraid.
Remember the Lord.
Pick up your stone again.
Rebuild the wall.”
This week, practice four things:
1. Pray first
2. Declare God’s authority
3. Remove rubble from your heart
4. Obey in small steps
God will strengthen your hands just as He strengthened Nehemiah’s.
Closing Prayer
“Lord, rebuild the broken walls of our lives.
Restore hope where there is fear.
Give us courage to obey today.
Teach us to pray and to remember You.
We reject every dark influence in Jesus’ name.
Build Your kingdom in us, our families, our careers, and our church.

「18」 and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked. But the man who sounded the trumpet stayed with me.
「19」 Then I said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “The work is extensive and spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall.
「20」 Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there. Our God will fight for us!”
「21」 So we continued the work with half the men holding spears, from the first light of dawn till the stars came out.”

Faith working within the same vision
Nehemiah prayed, fasted, planned, and personally inspected the site to rebuild Jerusalem's fallen walls. He organized the people and did not waste energy on non-essential matters.
In his heart was a single vision—a city where God's people would no longer be humiliated.
"Let us rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. We must never again suffer such humiliation at the hands of others." (Neh 2:17)
God speaks to us in the same way: "Rebuild the broken spiritual walls in your life, your family, and your community."
📖서론 – 같은 비전 안에서 일하는 신앙
느헤미야는 무너진 예루살렘 성벽을 다시 세우기 위해 기도하고, 금식하며, 계획하고, 직접 현장을 돌아보았습니다.
그는 사람들을 조직하고, 비본질적인 일에 에너지를 쏟지 않았습니다.
그의 마음속에는 단 하나의 비전—“하나님의 백성이 수치를 당하지 않는 도시”가 있었습니다.

1️⃣ Working Hard in the Same Vision

God’s people worked with sweat and perseverance. Nehemiah led by example—organizing, praying, fasting, and building. True progress came not through comfort but through wholehearted dedication.
“We worked from the first light of dawn till the stars came out.” (Nehemiah 4:21)
“By the grace of God I am what I am … I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.” (1 Corinthians 15:10)
Hard work itself is not the goal; faithfulness to God’s vision is. The people didn’t waste energy on distractions but poured it into rebuilding what mattered most.
Nehemiah and the people spared no effort for the sake of something worthwhile.
"There is no other way to achieve something worthwhile. There is only the path of hard work and sweat.”

”It is good to work diligently and consistently for a long time, according to one's health condition.”
1️⃣ 땀과 헌신 – 일하는 은혜
”같은 비젼안에서 헌신하여 땀흘리며 일한다”
하나님의 백성은 땀 흘리며 헌신으로 일했습니다.
진정한 성취는 편안함이 아니라 가치있는 목표를 향해 온 마음으로 헌신할 때 이루어졌습니다.
“우리는 새벽부터 별이 보일 때까지 일을 하였다.” (느 4:21)
“나는 모든 사도보다 더 많이 수고하였으나, 내가 한 것이 아니요 하나님의 은혜로라.” (고전 15:10)
노동 자체가 목적이 아니라, 하나님의 비전을 향한 충성이 목적입니다.
그들은 비본질적인 일에 에너지를 낭비하지 않았습니다.

느헤미야와 백성들은 가치있는 일을 위해서 어떤 수고도 아끼지 않았다.
"가치있는 그 무언가를 위해서는 달리 길이 없다. 땀흘리며 일하는 길 밖에는 없다.”
“자신의 건강상태에 맞게 꾸준히 오래도록 열심히 일하는 것이 좋다.”

2️⃣ Obstacles – “The Rubble”

Even when people share the same vision, obstacles remain.
Nehemiah’s workers became discouraged not by enemies—but by rubble, the piles of debris in front of them.
“The strength of the laborers is giving out, and there is so much rubble that we cannot rebuild the wall.” (Nehemiah 4:10)
Rubble represents fatigue, discouragement, distraction, and loss of purpose.
Sometimes, what hinders us most is not persecution but exhaustion and dissatisfaction with repetitive, unglamorous work.
God calls us to remove that rubble—spiritual and emotional clutter—through prayer and renewed purpose.
「14」 After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”
2️⃣장애물 "흙무더기, 돌무더기, 잔해”

같은 비전 안에 땀흘리며 일해도 장애물은 존재합니다.
백성들이 낙심한 이유는 적의 공격이 아니라, 눈앞의 돌무더기(흙더미, 잔해물) 때문이었습니다.
“흙더미는 아직도 산더미 같은데, 우리 힘으로는 이 성벽 다 쌓지 못하리.” (느 4:10)
돌무더기는 피로, 낙심, 두려움, 목표 상실을 상징합니다.
때로는 외부의 위협보다 반복적인 일상과 무의미함이 우리를 무너뜨립니다.
하나님은 우리로 하여금 목적을 새롭게 하는 기도로 그 돌무더기를 치워내게 하십니다.
「14」 백성이 두려워하는 것을 보고, 나는 귀족들과 관리들과 그 밖의 백성들을 격려하였다. "그들을 두려워하지 말아라. 위대하고 두려운 주님을 기억하고, 형제자매와 자식과 아내와 가정을 지켜야 하니, 싸워라."

3️⃣ Characteristics of Obstacles

Overwork and perfectionism: The desire for constant achievement leads to burnout.
Boredom: Losing joy because the work feels small or repetitive. (Working without a clear goal in sight / Not enjoying the work assigned to oneself)
Fear and doubt: Forgetting that God’s good hand is still upon us.

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10)
Pray for clear goals for the next season. The Holy Spirit gives vision where there is focus, not where there is complaint.

두려움과 불신: 여전히 함께하시는 하나님의 손길을 잊음
지체와 낙심 – 해야 할 일을 미루며 열정을 잃음

돌무더기를 치운다는 것은 하나님이 주신 일을 다시 기쁨으로 감당하는 것입니다.
“이렇게 일하는 것은 지루하다” 는 불평 속에서도 하루 일과를 충실히 해내는 것이 신앙인의 승리입니다
(전 9:10, 새번역) 네가 어떤 일을 하든지, 네 힘을 다해서 하여라. 네가 들어갈 무덤 속에는, 일도 계획도 지식도 지혜도 없다.
성령께서 앞으로의 기간 동안 구체적인 목표와 방향을 주시도록 기도하십시오.

4️⃣ Three Solutions for Clearing the Pile of Rocks

Start with prayer – Pray that the Holy Spirit will show you specific goals. (Pray for your work. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you specific goals for the next three months. Then charge toward those goals.)
Be faithful in small things – Excel in the daily tasks given to you today. (Make excelling in your daily tasks your goal.)
Work with joy – When you master small tasks, you discover the joy in them. (Not liking the work entrusted to you: "When you become proficient in any task, you realize how enjoyable it is and are amazed.")

4️⃣ 돌무더기를 치우는 세 가지 해결책

기도로 시작하라. – 성령께서 당신에게 구체적인 목표를 보여주시도록 기도하십시오.
(당신의 일을 위해 기도하라. 성령께서 당신에게 앞으로 석 달 동안에 구체적인 목표를 주시도록 간구하라. 그리고 그 목표를 향해 돌진하라.)
작은 일에 충성하라. – 오늘 주어진 하루 일과를 훌륭히 감당하십시오. (하루 일과를 훌륭히 해내는 것을 목표로 삼는다.)

5️⃣ Conclusion

Nehemiah’s workers overcame discouragement by returning to the vision.
They prayed, guarded, and worked together until the wall stood firm. In the same way, our strength is renewed when we remember why we build—because God’s hand is upon us.

What rubble in my life needs to be cleared away before I can build?

What emotional fatigue or fear keeps me from continuing the work?
Am I doing my work out of comparison and tension , or from calling?
How can I regain joy in the simple tasks God has given me?

느헤미야의 일꾼들은 낙심할 때마다 비전을 다시 바라보았습니다. 그들은 기도하고, 지키고, 함께 일했습니다.
우리의 힘도 목적을 다시 바라볼 때 새로워집니다. 하나님의 선한 손이 여전히 우리와 함께하기 때문입니다.

🕊️ Sermon Title: “Work and Rubble”
📖 Nehemiah 4:10–21 / 1 Corinthians 15:10 / Ecclesiastes 9:10 / Psalm 127:2
1️⃣ Introduction – Working Together in the Same Vision
When God restores His people, He calls them not just to pray, but to work—together in the same vision.
Nehemiah, moved by compassion and conviction, did not complain about the ruins of Jerusalem.
He prayed, planned, fasted, and personally inspected the broken walls.
He organized people into teams and taught them not to waste their strength on unimportant things.
His one goal was clear: that God’s people would no longer live in shame.
“Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” (Nehemiah 2:17)
Today, God gives us the same calling:
“Rebuild the spiritual walls that have fallen in your life, your home, and your community.”
2️⃣ Sweat and Devotion – The Grace of Working Faithfully
The people of Jerusalem worked from dawn until the stars came out.
Their work was not just construction—it was worship.
“We worked from the first light of dawn till the stars came out.” (Nehemiah 4:21)
“I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.” (1 Corinthians 15:10)
Nehemiah understood that the result didn’t depend on speed but on God’s hand.
He believed that God’s “good hand” was upon him, and that made his work peaceful even in hardship.
The same is true for us.
We are not called to chase results anxiously, but to work faithfully under the grace of God.
“As long as it is day, we must do the works of Him who sent Me.” (John 9:4)
“For He grants sleep to those He loves.” (Psalm 127:2)
3️⃣ Removing Obstacles – The “Rubble” in Our Lives
Even when people share the same vision, obstacles still appear.
In Nehemiah 4, the builders were not defeated by enemies—but by rubble, the piles of debris in front of them.
“The strength of the laborers is giving out, and there is so much rubble that we cannot rebuild the wall.” (Nehemiah 4:10)
Rubble represents fatigue, discouragement, distraction, and loss of focus.
Sometimes it is not persecution that stops us, but boredom and dissatisfaction with repetitive work.
We lose joy, and the work feels meaningless.
But God calls us to clear away that rubble through prayer and renewed purpose.
Removing rubble means finding joy again in what God has entrusted to us.
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10)
4️⃣ How to Clear the Rubble
1. Pray first.
  Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what needs to be removed and what goals you must focus on.
2. Be faithful in small things.
  God blesses those who are steady in the ordinary.
  Wash the dishes, study diligently, care for others—these are not small in His eyes.
3. Work with joy.
  Joy is not the reward of success—it is the strength that sustains faithfulness.
  When you delight in your calling, even simple work becomes holy work.
“Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10)
5️⃣ Reflection and Application
- What rubble in my life is blocking progress and joy?
- Where have I grown tired or discouraged in doing God’s work?
- Am I working from comparison or from calling?
- How can I restore joy in the small things God gave me?
6️⃣ Conclusion – God’s Hand and Our Faithful Effort
When the people of God became weary, Nehemiah reminded them of the vision.
They prayed, stood guard, and kept working until the wall was completed.
Their success came not from strategy or talent, but from the good hand of God.
Today, that same hand is upon us.
God blesses the work of those who labor faithfully under His vision.
“The God of heaven will give us success. We His servants will arise and build.” (Nehemiah 2:20)
Let us rise, clear the rubble, and build again.
Not in our own strength, but in the grace of the One who works through us.

Lord,
Give me strength to clear away the rubble in my life.
Help me to find joy again in the work You have entrusted to me.
Let my daily labor become worship, and my small faithfulness become part of Your great plan.
May Your good hand be upon my life, my family, and our church.

When each person faithfully builds their part of the wall, God’s hand completes the work and restores His people.
