“「4」 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.
「5」 Then I said: “Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments,
「6」 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you.
「7」 We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.
「8」 “Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations,
「9」 but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’
「10」 “They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.
「11」 Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.” I was cupbearer to the king.”

True prayer begins by holding onto God’s character and promises.

📖 Sermon: “A Faith of Fasting and Prayer”
Text: Nehemiah 1:4–11
Introduction
Beloved brothers and sisters, today’s message comes from Nehemiah 1. Nehemiah was a man who heard devastating news about his people and his city: the walls of Jerusalem were broken down, and the people were in great trouble and disgrace. At that moment, he didn’t turn first to human strategies or political solutions. Instead, he sat down, wept, fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven.
This is the kind of faith we need today—faith that seeks God earnestly in prayer and fasting, especially when our world, our families, and even our churches seem broken.
1. A Prayer of Distress (v.4)
Nehemiah responded to the brokenness of his people with fasting and prayer. He did not ignore the pain of his community. He entered into it, crying out to God.
In our own lives, we face desperate moments. In those times, God calls us not to despair, but to come before Him with tears and intercession. God never ignores the prayers of His children when they cry out from the heart.
2. A Prayer Holding onto the Covenant (vv.5–9)
Nehemiah addressed God as the One who keeps His covenant of love. In prayer, he reminded himself and his people of God’s unchanging character and promises.
True prayer begins not with our feelings, but with God’s Word. Like Nehemiah, we must hold onto God’s promises and say, “Lord, remember the word You spoke.” Praying Scripture is one of the most powerful ways to anchor our faith in His covenant.
3. A Prayer of Intercession (vv.6–7)
Notice that Nehemiah did not say, “They have sinned.” He said, “We have sinned.” He identified with his people, confessing the sins of the nation as his own.
This is the principle of intercession: standing in the gap for others, bearing their burdens before God. Abraham prayed for Sodom. Daniel confessed the sins of Israel. Jeremiah wept for his people. And ultimately, Jesus bore the sins of the whole world in prayer and on the cross.
4. A Prayer of Decision (v.11)
After four months of prayer, Nehemiah came to a moment of decision. To appear sad before the king was to risk his life. Yet strengthened through prayer, he stepped forward in faith and sought God’s favor.
Our faith must also lead to action. After we weep, fast, and pray, there comes a moment when God calls us to stand up, make decisions, and live courageously in our homes, workplaces, schools, and communities.
Conclusion
Fasting and prayer lead us deeper into God’s heart. They open the way for intercession and empower us to act in obedience.
Like Nehemiah, we are called to rebuild broken walls—whether in our families, our churches, or our society. May God raise up a people of prayer and fasting who stand in the gap, intercede for the community, and take bold steps of faith for His glory.
Amen.
