(Nehemiah 1:1-3, NIV11) “「1」 The words of Nehemiah son of Hakaliah: In the month of Kislev in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa,

「2」 Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.

「3」 They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.””

The Broken Reality

The temple and wall of Israel were destroyed.
Today our families, churches, and communities also face brokenness.

The Temple and the Wall

The temple builds personal worship and faith.
The wall protects and preserves the community.

Nehemiah’s Heart

He carried God’s heart and prayed with tears.
Through intercession and dedication, the wall was rebuilt.

Our Calling Today

We need the faith of the wall that restores community.
We are called to raise the next generation in faith and leadership.

    Text: Nehemiah 1:1–3

    1. Why Nehemiah for a New Semester?

The book of Nehemiah is about the restoration of God’s kingdom. God desires to speak His message of restoration to our lives today. Just as Israel experienced the destruction of their nation, the temple, and the walls of Jerusalem, we too face brokenness in our families, churches, and communities.

Israel fell because of idolatry, materialism, breaking the covenant, and an unwillingness to repent. Likewise, today many homes are spiritually collapsed, faith is not passed down to the next generation, and even Christian households often build only on a shallow, formal faith.

    2. “The Remnant in Great Trouble”

When Nehemiah asked about those who remained in Jerusalem, he heard: “The survivors are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.”

Their suffering was not because they stopped believing in God, but because the walls of the city still lay in ruins. In the same way, when we suffer, it is not always because of weak personal piety, but because the “walls” of our community life remain broken.

    3. Why the Wall Matters

The Bible often links broken walls with God’s judgment (Ezek. 13:5; 22:30). Likewise, restoration is pictured as rebuilding the ruined cities (Isa. 61:4). A city without walls is vulnerable, dishonored, and insecure. A church without “wall faith” cannot protect, unite, or carry out God’s mission fully.

    4. Temple Faith vs. Wall Faith

    • Temple faith: personal devotion, worship, salvation assurance. It is the foundation of Christian life.

    • Wall faith: communal responsibility, sacrifice, and leadership. It is about protecting, serving, and building up others.

Temple faith emphasizes worship; wall faith emphasizes leadership and responsibility. Without both, the community of God remains incomplete.

    5. Our Response Today

Through Nehemiah, God calls us to restore wall faith in our own lives.

    • Like Nehemiah, carry God’s heart and pray with intercession.

    • Learn to lead with prayer, strategy, and teamwork.

    • Stand in the gap for our families, churches, schools, workplaces, and neighbors.

Let us become the first generation of faith that raises the next generation with strong walls of belief. May people see Christ shining from our lives and say, “Are you a Christian?”—until the day we meet the Lord.
