Being Sneaky Is Not God's Way

■ Scripture

2 Samuel 14:25–15:37; 17–18, Psalm 63

(Our reading: 2 Samuel 15:1-6)

In the course of time, Absalom provided himself with a chariot and horses and with fifty men to run ahead of him. He would get up early and stand by the side of the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone came with a complaint to be placed before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out to him, “What town are you from?” He would answer, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.” Then Absalom would say to him, “Look, your claims are valid and proper, but there is no representative of the king to hear you.” And Absalom would add, “If only I were appointed judge in the land! Then everyone who has a complaint or case could come to me and I would see that they receive justice.” Also, whenever anyone approached him to bow down before him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him and kiss him. Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of the people of Israel.

■ Memory Verse

Do not steal. Do not lie. Do not deceive one another. (Leviticus 19:11)

■ Basic Points

· Key sentence: Being sneaky is not God's way.

· Absalom wanted to be king, so he used sneaky ways and stole people's hearts with nice words.

· But sneaky ways did not end well.

· David trusted God and waited.

· So when we feel like being sneaky, we choose honesty and pray.

■ The Sermon as a Story

1. A Game Where Lying Is Okay

Dear friends and everyone here, today is Sunday School Dedication Worship. I am so glad that children and adults are worshiping together.

Let me start with a game. Have you ever played "Two Truths and a Lie"? You say three things about yourself. Two are true and one is not. Your friends have to guess which one is the lie. For example: "I like pizza. I have flown on an airplane. I have ten cats." Which one is the lie?

This game is so much fun. Why? Because nobody gets hurt when we lie in the game. Everyone knows it is just a game.

But what about real life? In real life, lies and sneaky ways do hurt. Most of the time they get found out, and things can become much worse than if we had told the truth from the start. Has that ever happened to you? Maybe you got in more trouble for lying than you would have if you were honest. Or maybe you told only half the story, and it made things harder later. Answer in your heart.

Today I will tell you about a prince who used a very big sneaky plan. His name was Absalom. If you listen to the end, you will know what to do when you feel like being sneaky.

2. The Prince Who Wanted to Be King

Absalom was a son of King David. The Bible says there was no one in Israel as handsome as Absalom. He even had so much hair that every time he cut it, it weighed more than two kilograms. People could not take their eyes off him. He was very popular.

But there was pain in Absalom's heart. Something very sad and serious had happened inside the family. Absalom became so angry that he took revenge himself. That was a very big wrong. His father David was so hurt that for two years he did not see Absalom's face. But later David forgave him and welcomed him back.

What did Absalom do after he was forgiven? Did he become thankful and change? No. Greed was growing in his heart. He thought, "I am the oldest son, so I should be king." But David had already chosen Solomon to be the next king.

At that moment, Absalom had two choices. One was to wait for God's time and God's way. The other was to make himself king in his own way. Absalom chose the second.

The first thing he did was to look like a king. He got a fancy chariot and horses, and fifty men to run in front of him. Wherever he went, people would stare and say, "Wow, he looks like a king!"

What would you do? If God says "wait," but you want something right now, is it easy to wait? It is probably not easy. It was not easy for Absalom, either.

3. The Sneaky Plan at the Gate

Now we come to the passage we read together. Absalom got up early in the morning. He stood by the side of the road that led to the city gate. That was the road people took when they went to the king to have their problems settled. In those days, when people were treated unfairly, they went to the king and asked him to decide.

Let's imagine it. A man is walking with worry on his face. Then Absalom calls out in a friendly voice, "Hello! What town are you from?" The man answers, "I am from one of the tribes of Israel." Then Absalom says, "I heard your story, and you are right. Your case is good. But what can we do? The king has no one to listen to you."

Then he adds, "If only I were the judge in this land! Then everyone could come to me and get justice."

How do you think the man felt? Probably he felt relieved. He may have thought, "This person is on my side. I wish he were our king!"

Other people tried to bow down to Absalom. Then Absalom quickly took their hands, lifted them up, and even kissed them. He treated them like close friends, like family.

But think carefully. Did Absalom really do this because he loved those people? No. He was using them to become king. On the outside he was kind, but his heart was different. When what we show and what is in our heart are different, that is being sneaky.

The Bible says, "Absalom stole the hearts of the people of Israel." Stealing means taking what is not yours. But we do not only steal things. We can steal a person's heart with nice-sounding words.

Have you ever done that? Have you said only nice things to a friend so they would like you? Have you told people only what they wanted to hear, even when you thought something different? If your words and your heart are different, that can be a sneaky way, too.

4. The Sneaky Plan Grows

Absalom's sneaky plan did not stop there. It kept growing. One day Absalom went to his father David and said, "Father, I made a promise to God, and I want to keep it in Hebron." David was happy and said, "Go in peace."

But that was a lie. Absalom used a promise to God as an excuse to trick his father. Then he secretly sent messengers all over Israel to say, "When you hear the trumpet, shout, 'Absalom is king in Hebron!'" Two hundred men from Jerusalem went along with Absalom, and they knew nothing about the plan. They were used.

That is how sneaky ways work. They start with a small lie, then call for bigger lies, and in the end they hurt many people. Absalom's sneakiness hurt his family, and it hurt the whole nation.

5. David Runs Away

The news came to David. "Absalom is winning the hearts of the people of Israel! He has gathered an army!" David was shocked. His own son was trying to drive him out. David told his officials, "Let's leave the city quickly, or we will all be in danger." So David had to leave Jerusalem.

The Bible tells us how David looked as he climbed the Mount of Olives. His head was covered, his feet were bare, and he was weeping. In those days, people covered their heads and walked barefoot when they were very sad. Imagine a king leaving his city with tears. How painful it must have been for a father whose son had turned against him!

For a while, it seemed that Absalom's sneaky plan had worked. People followed him, and he came into Jerusalem and sat like a king. Don't you start to think, "Hey, sneaky ways work! Maybe it's okay to be sneaky?"

But the story was not over. God was not sitting still.

6. What God Did

On the way, David met his loyal friend Hushai. David asked him, "Go back to Jerusalem. Act like you are on Absalom's side, and help me from there." Hushai bravely did it.

Absalom had a very smart adviser named Ahithophel. Ahithophel said, "Let's send an army after David right now." If Absalom had followed that advice, David would have been in terrible danger.

But Absalom also asked Hushai. Hushai said, "Wait a little. Gather more soldiers and lead them yourself." Absalom thought Hushai's plan was better. So he did not attack right away.

The Bible tells us what was really going on. The Lord had decided to defeat Ahithophel's good advice. Absalom thought he had chosen wisely, but God was at work. Because of that, David got the time he needed to cross the river and get ready.

7. The End of Sneaky Ways

At last, the battle came. David asked his commanders, "For my sake, be gentle with my son Absalom." That is a father's heart. Even though his son had hurt him, David did not want Absalom to be harmed.

In the battle, Absalom was riding a mule under a large oak tree. His head got caught in the branches. The mule ran on, and Absalom was left hanging in the air. The Bible does not say exactly how it happened. It only says his head got caught.

Then David's commander Joab came and killed Absalom, even though David had said not to harm him. That is how Absalom's sneaky plan ended in sadness.

How did David feel when he heard the news? Was he happy? No. He went up to the room over the gate and cried out loud. "O my son Absalom! My son, my son!" He called again and again. His son had tried to become king and lost his life. How painful it must have been for a father!

What did Absalom want to get with his sneaky ways? The throne, the people's hearts, power, and fame. But in the end, all of them were gone. Sneaky ways may look like they work for a little while, but they do not end well.

8. David's Way

So how did David become king? David was also anointed by God. Being anointed is like God's promise: "I will make this person king." But David did not become king right away, even after that promise. He waited a long time. Only after King Saul died did the people of Judah anoint David at Hebron. Later all the elders of Israel made David their king. The people knew God had chosen David, and they remembered how bravely he had fought.

Absalom also had people shout that he was king at the same place, Hebron. It was the same place, but a completely different way. David waited, and Absalom hurried. David trusted God, and Absalom trusted sneaky ways.

David was not a perfect person. He did something very wrong once. But he honestly admitted it before God and turned back. God loves people who come back to him honestly.

Even in hard times, David looked for God. Psalm 63 is David's prayer of seeking God and depending on him. It is a song that says even in a dry and empty place, I need God most. When we fully trust God, we do not need sneaky ways to get what we need. God knows what we need.

What do you do when God says, "Wait"? When is it hard for you to wait? Maybe when you wait for a test score, or for something you want, or to become friends with someone. At those times, we choose. We can hurry like Absalom, or trust God and wait like David.

9. God Knows What We Need

There is a verse we remember together today. It is Leviticus 19:11. "Do not steal. Do not lie. Do not deceive one another." This is what God says to us.

When do we want to be sneaky? When we think, "If I do not do this, I will not get it." When we want a good score on a test, when we really want to win a game, when we want friends to like us. It is the same for the grown-ups. When we want success at work or need money, we want to be sneaky.

At those times, remember. God knows what we need. When we ask honestly, God helps us. Even if we do not get it right away, it is okay. God gives us what is best, at the best time, in the best way.

There is one more thing to think about. What if someone is sneaky to us? We feel hurt and angry. Think about David. His own son turned against him, but David's heart was not full of hate. To the end, he wanted his son to be safe. The Bible says, do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. We do not pay back a bad thing with a bad thing. We win with a good way.

10. A Week of Choosing Honesty

Let me finish. Today's key sentence is this: Being sneaky is not God's way. Let us say it together. Being sneaky is not God's way.

What we will do this week is simple. First, think about the moments when you want to be sneaky. It may be when you want to copy homework, or look at someone's answers on a test. It may be when you want to cheat in a game, or tell a lie so a friend will like you. Write one of those moments on a piece of paper and put it by your mirror.

And when that moment comes, do three things. First, stop. Second, choose honesty. Third, pray. "God, help me be honest." Remember just these three: stop, choose honesty, and pray.

It is the same for the grown-ups. At work, at home, with money and with time, there are moments when we want to be sneaky. Let all of us live this week choosing honesty together. When grown-ups are honest, children see and learn. When children are honest, grown-ups are encouraged. I hope our church will be a community where we are honest and can trust one another.

■ Prayer

God, sometimes we want to be sneaky. Help us choose honesty at those times. We trust that you know what we need. Help us walk in your way this week. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
