The Work of My Whole Life Is to Be a Shepherd

June 21, 2026 · Worship Frontier Church of Boston ·
Key Sentence
"The work of my whole life is to be a shepherd."
When the gospel takes hold of an entire life, that life itself becomes the proof of discipleship.
1

📖 2 Timothy 4:7–8
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day — and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing."
1
I longed to become a disciple of Christ
When we recognize that        — not ourselves — is the author of life, the journey of discipleship truly begins.
→ God
Watching his younger brother die of leukemia, he hit a wall. There was nothing he could do. In that helplessness, he came back to God — and at an age most would have given up, he passed the entrance exam and entered medical school. That day, he knew: this wasn't his strength.
2
I had zeal but no fruit
Human        alone can never fundamentally transform a soul.
→ effort
He tried everything — camping trips, barbecues, Bible studies. Everyone showed up and had a good time. But the next week, gathering again was hard. He kept asking himself: I'm doing everything I can, so why is there no fruit? That's when it hit him — his effort alone had a ceiling.
3
I found hope in heaven
When you see that neither wealth nor reputation can protect       , heaven becomes your only true hope.
→ life
His youngest sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. He pulled every string he had as a doctor. And yet God took her. Looking at his two-year-old and five-year-old nephews, he thought to himself: what's the point of holding on to money or status? That's when heaven became real to him.
4
My home-cell became my family
When       , my home-cell members changed too. Precisely when I wanted to give up, God was at work.
→ I changed
After losing his sisters, the love he had for them needed somewhere to go — and it went to his home-cell. But then a family moved far away, and he was ready to give up. Right at that moment, a foreign VIP family joined the cell. That family's presence stirred the others to serve — and salvation happened. God was at work precisely where he was about to quit.
5
In Boston, I understood the shepherd's heart
Each time someone       , I felt how precious that one soul truly was — and began to understand God's longing heart.
→ left
He came to Boston thinking it was for his career. He left knowing it was for his soul. One by one, people left the small church — a sister who couldn't get a job, a brother who got a professorship, a shepherd who had to relocate. Every departure made the empty seat feel enormous. And that's when he understood: the God who goes out to the streets to find guests — that's not just a parable.
6
"Put out into deep water and let down your nets"
Waiting anxiously for one member's        — that helpless waiting is the real heart of a shepherd.
→ call
After planting the Boston cell, he spent many Sundays just staring at the church entrance, waiting. At the hospital, his word moved entire surgical teams. At church, he waited anxiously for one phone call that never came. He wasn't embarrassed by that gap. "Whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me" — that verse stopped being theology and became his life.
7
I began confessing Christ in every area of life
"I didn't know you were being       , Doctor." — If Christ does not show in our daily life, something is wrong.
→ trained
Two weeks in COVID quarantine — no hospital calls, no emergencies. Just him and the Word. He said everyone else was going stir-crazy, but for him it was the most spiritually alive he'd felt in 19 years. Then one day a nurse said, "I didn't know you were being trained, Doctor." That landed hard. My life at church and my life at work — they don't look the same. That was the moment the hospital stopped being just a workplace.
8
I began communicating with my pastor through the pastoral journal
A home-cell is not something a shepherd carries        — it is carried together with the pastor.
→ alone
2023 was brutal — rent scams, a marriage on the edge of collapse. He carried the weight of each family's pain as if it were his own. He poured it all into the pastoral journal. And the pastor wrote back — every single time. "You're amazing." "What a year this is going to be." Each response felt like someone reaching through the dark and grabbing his hand. At year's end, what looked like a log of suffering turned out to be a record of miracles.
9
I began witnessing to Christ at my workplace
No matter how much money you have, a life without        is a life to be pitied.
→ community
He ran into a medical school friend who earns three times what he does. Wife in Jeju, he's in Ulsan alone with three dogs — seeing his wife maybe once a year. Listening to that, he thought: what's all that money for? He has people to pray with, eat with, cry with, celebrate with. He tells his wife these days: today is the happiest day of my life.
10
The work of my whole life is to be a shepherd
Even if my last day comes suddenly, I want to have lived as a        and stand before the Lord with this confession.
→ shepherd
Yes, walking with your people through their pain is hard. But he knows what's waiting at the finish line — and that changes everything. He's no longer afraid of dying suddenly, the way his siblings did. If his last day came tomorrow, he'd want to be found doing exactly this. "I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith."

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness…"
— 2 Timothy 4:7–8 (NIV)
