The Father's Heart for Israel

Amos 9:14–15  ·  July 12, 2026  ·  Guest Sermon
📖 Key Verse / 핵심 구절
"I will plant Israel in their own land,
never again to be uprooted."
— Amos 9:15 (NIV) / 아모스 9:15 (새번역)

A Reversal at the End of Judgment

Amos was the prophet who proclaimed judgment against the northern kingdom of Israel more forcefully than almost anyone else. The whole book is filled with the language of warning and judgment.

But at the very end of the book, in the last verses of chapter 9, something surprising happens. From the mouth of the God who had been declaring judgment, a promise of restoration begins to flow.

"I will bring my people Israel back... I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted."

— Amos 9:14–15 (NIV)

From beginning to end, the subject of this passage is God. This is not a promise that depends on what Israel does — it is a promise of what God Himself will do.

Today, through this text, we want to look together at the Father's heart for Israel — and at the place we ourselves are called to stand in, as we share in that heart.

God Who Brings Us Back from Captivity

Amos 9:14a

"I will bring my people Israel back from captivity."

Israel was carried into exile by Assyria and Babylon, and later, when Rome destroyed Jerusalem, scattered across the whole world. To human eyes, it looked like a story that was completely finished. But God declares, "I will bring them back."

This promise did not end as an ancient event. In 1948, after two thousand years without a homeland, the nation was reborn — and even now, Jewish people continue to return to their ancestral land through what is called the Aliyah. We see with our own eyes, in history itself, that what God has spoken will certainly come to pass.

Human Eyes

"It looked like a story that had ended forever."

Captivity, ruin, scattering.

God's Declaration

"I will bring my people Israel back from captivity."

God calls them back again.

This asks something of us: in what place in my own life am I waiting for God to call me back?

A Rebuilt, Fruitful Life

Amos 9:14b

"They will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them; they will plant vineyards and drink their wine, they will make gardens and eat their fruit."

God's restoration is not an abstract idea. Rebuilding ruined cities, tending vineyards, eating the fruit of orchards — this is the restoration of concrete, ordinary, daily life.

This verse tells us something important. God's restoration does not stay in the spiritual realm alone — it renews every part of life: where people live, how they labor, what they eat. And the fruit of that restoration is not someone else's — it is what "they themselves" pressed, what "they themselves" tended. God lets His restored people labor again, and enjoy the fruit again.

  • RebuildThe ruined city is raised up again.
  • VineyardThey drink what their own labor produced.
  • OrchardThey eat what their own hands tended.

A Grace That Cannot Be Uprooted

Amos 9:15  /  Genesis 15

"I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them."

This verse is the climax of today's text. God does not merely say, "I will bring them back." He says, "I will plant them, never again to be uprooted." This is not a temporary recovery — it is a promise of permanent settlement.

The ground of this promise is not Israel's condition or worthiness. In Genesis 15, when God made covenant with Abraham, God alone passed between the divided pieces of the sacrifice while Abraham slept — this covenant was, from the very beginning, a covenant fulfilled by God's own faithfulness alone. Even when Israel sinned, there was discipline — but God never utterly abandoned them. "I will plant them, never again to be uprooted" is a promise about God's own character.

This promise rests not on Israel's condition, but on God's own faithfulness.

Our Place in This Story, Today

In this story of restoration, we are not called to be spectators, but participants. Our Gentile church is a people in debt to the gospel. We received the Scriptures through Israel, and we were saved through the Messiah who came through Israel — so it is only right that we now stand together with God's own heart, which is looking toward Israel's restoration.

The Korean Israel Mission (KIM) has, for the past fifteen years, followed this very heart of the Father — carrying each region of Israel in prayer and material support, and helping to plant Messianic Jewish congregations. Today, through Rev. Hyangsook Lee, we want our own church to hear this call to ministry as well.

Spectator

"Watching Israel's restoration from a distance."

A church that has forgotten its debt to the gospel.

Partner

"Joining that restoration through prayer and devotion."

A church that responds as one in debt to the gospel.

Step 1 — Pray & Give

Pray for Israel and Jewish missions, and give toward KIM's ministry.

Step 2 — Go

When the opportunity comes, join a vision trip and walk the land itself.

Step 3 — Discern

Discern anti-Israel sentiment and distorted information, and see Israel with God's own heart.

A Promise About Who God Is

"I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them." This is a promise to Israel — and at the same time, it is a promise about who God is. He is the One who keeps what He plants, to the very end.

Church, today we want this Father's heart to be planted in our own hearts as well. May the heart that looks toward Israel's restoration take root in our prayers, and in our lives.

"God doesn't just bring His people back —
He plants them, so they will never be uprooted again."

🙏 Closing Prayer

Lord, plant in us the same faithful heart You have for Israel.

Make us partners, not spectators,

in the restoration You are already bringing. Amen.

Plant.
God doesn't just bring His people back — He plants them, so they will never be uprooted again.
하나님은 그분의 백성을 돌아오게 하실 뿐 아니라, 그들을 심으시고, 다시는 뽑히지 않게 하십니다.
