Is Love Flowing?

OPENING
Over the past several weeks, we have been walking through four kinds of love.
Storge — the love that just belongs. Like family. No explanation needed.
Philia — the love that grows through shared time and shared struggle.
Eros — the love that longs and pursues with the whole heart.
Agape — the love that gives first, without condition, without waiting.
Today we close this series with one question.
Is love actually flowing — in you, through you, to others?
Love is not a feeling. Love is a flow. When it moves, it brings life. When it stops, it stagnates.
SCRIPTURE
Romans 16:3, 5 (NIV) "Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus... Greet also the church that meets at their house."
Matthew 12:49–50 (NIV) "He pointed to his disciples and said, 'Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.'"
Two things to notice:
The early church had no building. It met in homes. The church was the people.
Jesus redefined family — not by blood, but by shared direction toward the Father.
This is what we call a home church — not a program, not a system. It is a family community built on a biblical spirit.
POINT 1 — WHY BEFORE HOW
The church is not a system. It is a direction.
Many churches ask: How do we grow? How do we structure our small groups? That is a How question.
But the more important question is Why.
"Why are we doing this?"
I attended the 140th Home Church Pastors' Conference last week in Vancouver. One statement stayed with me:
"If your Why collapses, no system will save you."
The home church spirit is not about running a small group called a 목장 (Mokjang). It is about committing — over years, in one direction — to becoming the kind of church the New Testament describes.
A church that meets in homes (Romans 16)
A church that is a genuine family (Matthew 12)
A church where every member carries the ministry (Ephesians 4)
A church led by servants, not managers (Mark 10)
This is our Why. Agape — the love that gave first — is the reason we show up.
When Why is alive, How becomes joy. When Why is gone, How becomes a burden.
POINT 2 — THE AXIS
The pastor must be full — with Word, prayer, and relationship.
Think of a wheel. The three spokes are:
목장 (Mokjang) — small group community
삶 공부 (Life Study) — discipleship education
주일 예배 (Sunday Worship) — gathered worship
For the wheel to turn, there must be an axis — a center that holds everything together.
That axis is the pastor.
And for the axis to hold, the pastor must be full.
Full of what?
The Word — not just prepared sermons, but a life shaped by Scripture
Prayer — interceding by name for each shepherd and each VIP
Encouragement — speaking life, not correction, as the first language
The conference reminded me of something I already knew but needed to hear again:
"People don't change when they are scolded. They change when they are genuinely praised."
So I make this commitment to you today: I will pray for you by name. I will look for what is right before I look for what is wrong. I will be the kind of pastor you can come to when things are hard.
POINT 3 — THE SHEPHERD'S WEEK
The shepherd's ministry begins on Monday, not Sunday.
If you are a shepherd (목자) in this church, this is for you.
Leading the Friday gathering is not your primary ministry. Your primary ministry happens between Sundays.
Here is what that looks like:
Monday — Contact one person from your group. Not a long call. Just: "How are you doing this week?" That is pastoral care.
Midweek — Pray for each member by name. For your VIP by name. Hold their situation before God.
Before the gathering — Prepare not just the content, but your heart. Who needs to be heard this week? Who needs a word of encouragement?
During the gathering — Listen. Really listen. When someone shares, take a note. Most people in the room are thinking about something else. But the shepherd must be the one person who is actually paying attention.
Then — shape the prayer from what you heard. Do not just ask "What are your prayer requests?" and write a list. Let the sharing lead into prayer naturally.
One more thing: your VIP.
The person God has entrusted to you — that is your VIP. It may not be someone like you. It may be someone older, younger, from a different background.
Here is how the four loves apply to your VIP:
Storge — just be present. Show up. Be someone they can count on.
Philia — spend time. Make contact. Eat together.
Eros — pursue their well-being with longing. Pray specifically for what they need.
Agape — go first. Without waiting for them to deserve it.
A story from the conference:
A man joined a home group for the first time. He was younger than everyone else. Before he could even sit down, the oldest man in the group — a distinguished, accomplished man — quietly picked up his bag and carried it inside.
That one act changed everything for him. He did not come back for the teaching. He came back because of that moment.
That is Agape. Small. Unannounced. First.
POINT 4 — THE FLOW
Love flows through relationship: Lord → Pastor → Shepherd → Flock → VIP.
This is the shape of how love moves in a healthy church.
It does not begin with a program. It begins with the Lord. From the Lord to the pastor. From the pastor to the shepherd. From the shepherd to the flock. From the flock to the VIP who has not yet come home.
Where is the flow blocked?
Sometimes it is blocked in the pastor — when I am running on empty instead of staying full.
Sometimes it is blocked in the shepherd — when the gathering becomes a duty instead of a delight.
Sometimes it is blocked in the member — when we show up to receive but not to give.
And sometimes it is blocked in the relationship between us — when distance has grown without either of us noticing.
The conference reminded me again: the Sunday worship is not where the love is generated. The love is generated in the week — in the praying, the contacting, the listening, the small acts of care. And then it arrives at Sunday worship, and we feel it together.
That is why we sing and feel something. That is why tears come sometimes without warning. That is not atmosphere. That is accumulated love, finally arriving.
CLOSING
At the end of the conference, there was a closing prayer. One line stayed with me:
"Our lives are not long. The path of a pastor — the path of anyone who carries ministry — is not easy. But to spend our short lives looking for the comfortable and the easy... that would be too small a life. Lord, let us not lose the honest questions we carry before you."
That is my prayer for this church.
Not that we would be bigger. Not that we would be more organized. But that love would flow — through each of us, between us, and out to the people God has placed in our lives.
Is love flowing in you?
If it is — keep going. The fruit takes time, but it is real.
If it is blocked somewhere — that is okay. That is honest. Name it. Bring it to God. Take one small step this week.
Agape does not wait for a big moment. It starts today. With something small. With one act. With one name.
ONE-LINE PRAYER
"Lord, let love flow through me — not as a performance, but as a life. Use this church, and use me. Amen."
PRACTICE THIS WEEK

Contact your VIP this week — not to invite them somewhere, just to ask how they are.
Write down one person's name and pray for them by name every day this week.
Say something encouraging to your shepherd — they carry more than you know.
