Title: "The Certainty of Salvation and Sanctification: A New Year's Sermon"

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

[1]

Today, as we embark on the journey of a new year, we gather for worship on this New Year's Sunday. As we begin this year that lies ahead of us, I want to share with you about two certainties that every believer should embrace.

In the upcoming year, let us walk with confidence in these two assurances, shaping a new life guided by faith.

[2] Firstly, believers must hold onto the assurance of salvation. This certainty involves responding to the invitation into a new identity, believing that a new status has begun. The story of the prodigal son in Luke 15 illustrates this beautifully. The wayward son, after squandering everything, returns home, and the father not only welcomes him but restores his status by putting a ring on his finger. The assurance of salvation is the belief that, through faith in Jesus, we have become children of God with a new identity.

[3] Secondly, believers need the assurance of sanctification. This involves responding to the invitation to live a life fitting for our new identity. In the same prodigal son story, the father throws a feast for the returning son. However, the elder son, despite his apparent faithfulness, refuses to join the celebration. This part of the narrative teaches us about sanctification—the process of living a life befitting the identity we have received. It is about becoming more like the Father's children in our daily lives.

[4] The prodigal son's story doesn't tell us what happens after the feast. What could be the next part of the story? It is undoubtedly about "making sons of the Father." If the first part of Luke 15 is about "the lost son returning home, the son in the house, and the loving Father," then the subsequent part is about "the Father disciplining the two sons to make them true children."

[5] Our God, who sent His only Son, Jesus, to cover our sins by carrying the cross, has adopted us as His children. This love and zeal of God, extended to us as His children, aim to lead us into living a life that reflects our newfound identity—a life of sanctification.

[6] To hold onto the assurance of salvation, we must grasp the understanding of our state before salvation and how it was achieved. Ephesians 2:1-3 and Romans 5:8 emphasize the transformative power of God's love through faith in Jesus.

[7]For the certainty of sanctification, we must believe in the resurrection of Jesus. Our gracious Father, who initiated our salvation, will bring it to completion. The Bible urges us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. Despite stumbling and facing difficulties, we are called to deepen our faith in the resurrection during challenging times. Even in our failures and regrets, God is at work, shaping us into true children through His discipline.

[8] As we embrace our new identity as children of God, let us express gratitude. Being God's children not only means obtaining a new status but also marks the beginning of a new life. If we have become children, there is a process to live as children, and this process is sanctification.

[9] May you walk in the wisdom of fearing the Lord, understanding that His promises are fulfilled in Christ. As we say 'Amen,' glorifying God, let our lives be a testament to His glory.

May you find assurance in the certainty of salvation and sanctification as you journey through the new year.

God bless you all.

(Ephesians 2:1-3, ESV) “「1」 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins

「2」 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience--

「3」 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.”

(Rm 5:8, ESV) “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

(John 6:40, ESV) “For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day."”

(Philippians 1:6, ESV) “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

(Romans 5:8, ESV) “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

(Philippians 2:12, ESV) “Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,”

(James 1:17, ESV) “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”

(2 Corinthians 1:20, ESV) “For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.”
